Bio
Praised for his “felicitous sound and a classy, natural way with a phrase”, Kyle Guglielmo is a North American artist equally at home in the opera house, black box theatre, and the recording studio, and is best known for his portrayal of Curly in the University of North Carolina School of the Arts recreation of the original 1943 production of Oklahoma!, broadcast on UNC-TV. He is based in southern Massachusetts.
Recent projects and collaborations include self-produced recordings of songs by John Laing and Hamish Guthrie. In 2020 Kyle made his company debut with OperOttawa, first singing Masetto in Don Giovanni Trionfante in February. Kyle also returned to Chorus Hamilton as the Bass Soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C Major.
The 2018-19 season began with a move from New York to Hamilton, Ontario, performing as Macalister Smile in A Modicum of Freedom by Ryan Sero, and as Tommy in the dreamer examines his pillow by John Patrick Shanley, both at the Staircase Theatre. He also played Francis in the 2019 HamilTEN Festival Gold Prize winning play Goodbye by Kate Racheter. Kyle made his Canadian concert debut in February 2019 singing as the Bass Soloist in Haydn’s Creation with Chorus Hamilton, and capped off the spring 2019 season with two performances at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Oakville, Ontario: the world premiere of Mass for Jazz Trio and Singers by Nathan Hiltz, followed by a feature performance of Gerald Finzi’s Let Us Garlands Bring and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs as part of the St. Jude’s Choir’s Wincester Preview Concert.
In 2017 Kyle made his debut with Little Opera Theater of New York in the local premiere of Carlisle Floyd's Prince of Players and joined the roster of the Princeton Festival to both make his role debut as the Duke (Don Carrasco) and cover Don Quixote in the Festival's summer production of Man of La Mancha. He began the 2017–2018 season joining Piedmont Opera as Ponchel in the North Carolina premiere of Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Silent Night.
Highlights of Kyle’s 2016 activity include his Carnegie Hall debut as the Celebrant in Bernstein's Celebrations from MASS with the Yale Symphony, arranged and conducted by John Mauceri, and his debut with Brooklyn's LoftOpera as the Deuxième Coryphée in Le comte Ory.
Establishing a presence in New York's contemporary opera scene Kyle created roles in three world premieres with American Opera Projects: Brodess/Overseer in Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that Line to Freedom by Nkeiru Okoye, Dax in The Companion by Robert Paterson and David Cote, and Calvin Griffith in the concert premiere of The Summer King by Dan Sonenberg. He also created the role of Dr. Pill in the world premiere of Daron Hagen's Little Nemo in Slumberland at Sarasota Opera and has performed the role of Calvin Griffin in Portland Ovations' production of The Summer King.
Kyle’s other notable musical theater performances include Giuseppe Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza with Piedmont Opera. He can be heard as a Collegian in Jerome Kern's Roberta on the New World Records 2014 cast album.
Mr. Guglielmo is an alumnus of the William Esper Studio in Manhattan, the A. J. Fletcher Opera Institute (University of North Carolina School of the Arts), and Georgia State University, in addition to fulfilling a young artist residency with Sarasota Opera.
